Nepal’s Maoist Ex-Child Soldier Lenin Bista Met UN Secretary

KATHMANDU: Lenin Bista, a former Nepal’s Maoist child soldier met UN Secretary General for Children and Armed Conflict at Belgium to draw concern about their problems at Nepal.
Earlier, the Nepal government banned Bista to participate in a meeting at Thailand regarding child soldiers. But, he able to reached Europe this time. Earlier, he was a forced to return from airport even after taking boarding pass.
Bista submitted a demand paper to Virginia Gamba, special representative of the UN Secretary General for Children and Armed Conflict. He asked with UN to make recommendations to the Nepal government to provide compensation to the former child soldiers on par with the combatants who had qualified in the UN-led verification process.

Bista and discharged PLA members have been demanding sustainable management 4,009 discharged PLA, government and concerned parties have to take responsibility for the abuse of rights of the child and insure child rights according to international standards.
Since ex-child soldiers have been deprived of the fundamental human right to education, the government of Nepal have to address youth combatants’ practical concerns based on a social and economic package based on principles of social justice, Bista and his team demanding.

Lenin Bista from Kavrepalanchok district was recruited as a child soldier in 2002 when he was 12 years old. He served the Communist Party of Nepal – Maoist’s ‘People’s War’ for seven years before the peace process started in November 2006. During the verification for integration into the Nepal Army by the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN), Bista along with other 2,973 child soldiers were declared unfit and incapable. Since then, Bista has been leading the Discharged People’s Liberation Army Struggle Committee along with his friends demanding the fair treatment of the discharged child soldiers and remove the label of ‘unqualified’ given during the integration process.
